Hey there, thanks for popping into my blog, it’s lovely to meet you!
My name’s Michelle, most people call me Shell, and I’m a late 30’s Yorkshire lass, who in her mind is still in her teens, and probably always will be. I promised myself in 2017 that I was going to start a blog of my favourite things… well it’s now knocking 2019, so that gives you enough of an idea of my level of organisation. Well, I was just busy, okay..!
My blog is a tribute to bookworms around the world. I scoff books… always have, always will. I completed my Masters Degree in English in 2015, after years of critiquing literature. My main dissertation was focused on J. M. Coetzee (“you mad cow!” I hear you scream). Yep, reflections on post-apartheid South Africa in the novels of the genius Coetzee. All my cohort focused on beloved classics such as Austen, Brontë, Eliot and the rest of the nineteenth century crew. Which admittedly, in hindsight, I should have done too. It was the hardest 6 months of my life. But what I left with, as well as my continued love for the classics, was a new admiration for the more contemporary, and a greater appreciation of what the hell was actually going on in the world around me.
I didn’t think anything could match the ballrooms and bonnets of Austen. But looking back, maybe I was hiding in a world that didn’t exist any more. There were no Mr Darcy’s or Healthcliff’s walking through Leeds city centre. I had such a romantic view of the world. My friends started introducing me to new genres – thrillers, ‘chick lit’, a bit off horror courtesy of Mr Stephen King. I found a new love in Scandi crime and biographies, and eventually my book shelves were filled with new titles from, shock, the twenty first bloody century!
You won’t find any particular genre of book in this blog, because I’m a diverse, complicated creature. What you will find is books from all over, reviewed with an open mind, written with humour, and always handled with awe and a little bit of Yorkshire love. I’m forever in admiration for those who dare to put pen to paper and throw their passion to the world for all to pore over. Authors, you are my heroes. And fellow bookworms, you are my friends.
I hope you like my blog, as much as I love creating it.
Much love, Shell. x
